Happy Blogiversary from GeneaBLoggers

Carol Kostakos Petranek has been blogging at Spartan Roots since January 2012.  Carol’s roots are from Brookly, N.Y. and she currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area.  She started blogging to document her Greek research and assist others who are embarking on this exciting journey.

Carol writes, “Greek research is especially challenging due to the lack of online records and language issues. Information is primarily obtained through onsite visits, correspondence, and personal assistance. My goal is to help researchers navigate this process, understand the resources available, and make the contacts needed to locate ancestral information.”

Surnames of interest are: Kostakos, Papagiannakos, Aridas/Mihalakakos, Eftaxias, Christakos, Zarafonitis, Laricos, and Zaharakis.

Carol also shared, “For the past three years, I have volunteered to digitize and preserve church records in Sparta. This is the first time that such a project has been undertaken in Greece. My hope is that these records will be made available online.”
