statue of LibertyOct 28, 1886. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s famous sculpture, the statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, on Bedloes Island at New York Harbor, was dedicated. Ground breaking for the structure was in April 1883. A sonnet by Emma Lazarus, inside the pedestal of the statue, contains the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
