National holiday commemorates Battle of Boyne, July 1 (OS), 1690, in which the forces of King William III of England, Prince of Orange, defeated those of James II, at Boyne River in Ireland. Ordinarily observed on July 12, but if that date falls on a weekend, the holiday is celebrated on the following Monday.
