Government seizure of Steel Mills On 8 Apil 1952, President Harry S Truman seized control of the nation’s steel mills by presidential order in an attempt to prevent a shutdown by strikers. On Apr 29, a US district court declared the seizure unconstitutional and workers immediately walked out. Production dropped from 300,000 tons a day to less than 20,000. After 53 days the strike ended July 24, with steelworkers receiving a 16-cent hourly wage raise plus a 5.4-cent hourly increase in fringe benefits.
