July 21, 1899. American author born at Oak Park, IL. Hemingway made his name with such works as The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) and The Old Man and the Sea (1952). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954 and wrote little thereafter. Hemingway shot himself July 2, 1961, at Ketchum, ID, after having been seriously ill for some time.
