Earth at Perihelion Jan 3. At approximately 12:43 AM, EST, planet Earth will reach perihelion, that point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun (about 91,400,000 miles). Earth’s mean distance from the sun (mean radius of its orbit) is reached early in the months of April and October.
