Aug 11, 1807. Missouri legislator who was president of the US for one day. Born at Frogtown, KY. Atchisons strong proslavery opinions made his name prominent in legislative debates. He served as president pro tempore of the Senate a number of times, and he became president of the US for one daySunday, Mar 4, 1849 pending the swearing in of President-elect Zachary Taylor on Monday, Mar 5, 1849. The city of Atchison, KS, andthe county of Atchison, MO, are named for him. He died at Gower, MO, Jan 26, 1886.
