First day of Lent in Eastern Christianity. It is celebrated in Eastern Orthodox churches as a time of clearing away sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods. A special service called Forgiveness Vespers ends with the Ceremony of Mutual Forgiveness enabling the faithful to begin Lent with a clean conscience.
