Aug 12, 1881. Born at Ashfield, MA, Cecil Blount DeMille wasa film showman extraordinaire known for lavish screen spectacles. He produced more than 70 major films, which were noted more for their large scale than for their subtle artistry, including Cleopatra, The Plainsman, Reapthe Wild Wind and The Ten Commandments (in 1923 and 1956). DeMille was awarded an Oscar for The Greatest Show on Earth in 1953. He died Jan 21, 1959, at Hollywood, CA.
