Aug 5, 1864. A Union fleet under Admiral David Farragut attempted to run past three Confederate forts into Mobile Bay, AL. After coming under fire, the Union fleet headed into a maze of underwater mines, knownat that time as torpedoes. The ironclad Tecumseh was sunk by a torpedo, after which Farragut is said to have exclaimed, Damn the torpedoes full steam ahead! The Union fleet was successful and Mobile Bay was secured.
