Dec 26. Ordinarily observed on the first day after Christmas. Alegal holiday in Canada, the United Kingdom and many other countries. Formerly (according to Robert Chambers) a day when Christmas gift boxes were regularly expected by a postman, the lamplighter, the dustman and generally by all those functionaries who render services to the public at large, without receiving payment therefore from any individual. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Monday or Tuesday immediately following may be proclaimed or observed as a bank or public holiday.

Kwanzaa – 50th Anniversary

Dec 26 Jan 1, 2016. African-American family observance created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga in recognition of traditional African harvest festivals. This seven-day festival stresses unity of the black family,with a harvest feast (karamu) on the first day and a day of meditation on the final one. Kwanzaa means first fruit in Swahili.

‘Howdy Doody’ Television Premiere – Anniversary

Dec 27, 1947. The first popular childrens show was brought toTV by Bob Smith and was one of the first regular NBC shows to be shown in color. It was set in the circus town of Doodyville. Children sat in the bleachers Peanut Gallery and participated in activities such as songs and stories. Human characters were Buffalo Bob (Bob Smith), the silent clown Clarabell (Bob Keeshan, Bobby Nicholson and Lew Anderson), storekeeper Cornelius Cobb (Nicholson), Chief Thunderthud (Bill LeCornec), Princess Summerfall Winter-spring (Judy Tyler and Linda Marsh), Bison Bill (Ted Brown) and wrestler Ugly Sam (Dayton Allen). Puppet costars included Howdy Doody, Phineas T. Bluster, Dilly Dally, Flub-a-Dub, Captain Scuttlebutt, Double Doody and Heidi Doody. The filmed adventures of Gumby were also featured.In the final episode, Clarabell broke his long silence to say, Goodbye, kids.

Dec 28, 1895. The Lumire brothers Louis and Augusteprojected short films for paying customers on this date at the Grand Caf in Paris, France. This was the first time this had ever been done and is considereda key moment in film history.

Poor Richard’s Almanack Published – Anniversary

Dec 28, 1732. The Pennsylvania Gazette carried the first knownadvertisement for the first issue of Poor Richards Almanack by Richard Saunders (Benjamin Franklin) for the year 1733. The advertisement promised many pleasant and witty verses, jests and sayings. . . new fashions, gamesfor kisses. . . men and melons. . . breakfast in bed, &c. Americas mostfamous almanac, Poor Richards was published through the year 1758 and has been imitated many times since.

U.S. Pledge of Allegiance Recognized – Anniversary

Dec 28, 1945. The US Congress officially recognized the Pledgeof Allegiance and urged its frequent recitation in Americas schools. The pledge was composed in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister. At thetime, Bellamy was chairman of a committee of state school superintendentsof education, and several public schools adopted his pledge as part of the Columbus Day quadricentennial celebration that year. In 1954 the Knights of Columbus persuaded Congress to add the words under God to the pledge. In 2002 a federal appeals court found the pledge unconstitutional for use in public schools due to the under God phrase, but the Supreme Court reversed the case for procedural reasons and did not comment on the issue of constitutionality.

Wounded Knee Masacre – Anniversary

Dec 29, 1890. Anniversary of the massacre of more than 200 Native American men, women and children by the US Seventh Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek, SD. Government efforts to suppress a ceremonial religious practice, the Ghost Dance (which called for a messiah who would restore the bison to the plains, make the white men disappear and bring back the old Native American way of life), had resulted in the death of Sitting Bull, Dec15, 1890, which further inflamed the disgruntled Native Americans and culminated in the slaughter at Wounded Knee, Dec 29.

Ellis Island Opens – 125th Anniversary

Jan 1, 1892. Ellis Island was opened on New Year’s Day in 1892. Over the years more than 20 million individuals were processed through the stations. The island was used as a point of deportation as well: in 1932 alone, 20,000 people were deported from Ellis Island. When the US entered WWII in 1941, Ellis Island became a Coast Guard station. It closed Nov 12, 1954, and was declared a national park in 1956. After years of disuse it was restored, and in 1990 it was reopened as a museum.

Emancipation Proclamation Effective as of 1 January 1863, President Abraham Lincoln, by executive proclamation of 22 September 1862, declared that on this date “all persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever, free.”
