Levittown Opens – Anniversary

Oct 1, 1947. On this date the first residents moved into what would become Levittown at Long Island, NY. The community developed by William Levitt and his brother Alfred with their father, Abraham, started as affordable rental houses built for returning WWII veterans. In 1948 the Levitts began to sell the 800-square-foot homes for less than $ 8,000. By 1951, when this first community was finished, the Levitts had built 17,447 mass-produced Cape Cod and ranch homes. In 1952, they started constructionon a new Levittown in Bucks County, PA, where they built another 17,000houses, and beginning in 1958, they built 12,000 homes in Willingboro,NJ.

‘The Twilight Zone’ Television Debut – Anniversary

Oct 2, 1959. The Twilight Zone went on the air with these now-familiar words: There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of mans fear and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone. The anthology program ran five seasons for 154 installments, with a one-year hiatus between the third and fourth seasons. Created and hosted by Rod Serling, it is now considered to have been one of the best dramas to appear on television. The last original episode was telecast June 15, 1964.

Mohandas Gandhi’s Birthday – Anniversary

He was assassinated in the garden ofhis home at New Delhi, Jan 30, 1948. On the anniversary of Gandhis birth (Gandhi Jayanti) thousands gather at the park on the Jumna River at Delhiwhere Gandhis body was cremated. Hymns are sung; verses from the Gita, the Koran and the Bible are recited; and cotton thread is spun on small spinning wheels (one of Gandhis favorite activities).

‘Captain Kangaroo’ Television Debut – Anniversary
Oct 3 all-day

Captain Kangaroo Oct 3, 1955. On the air until 1985, this was the longest-running children’s TV show until it was surpassed by Sesame Street. Starring Bob Keeshan as Captain Kangaroo, it was broadcast on CBS and PBS. Other characters included Mr Green Jeans, Grandfather Clock, Bunny Rabbit, Mr Moose and Dancing Bear. Keeshan was an advocate for excellence in children’s programming and even supervised which commercials would appear on the program.

‘Mickey Mouse Club’ Television Debut – Anniversary

Oct 3, 1955. This afternoon show for children was on ABC. Among its young cast members were Mouseketeers Annette Funicello and Shelley Fabares. A later version, The New Mickey Mouse Club, starred Keri Russell, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

German Reunification – Anniversary

Oct 3, 1990. After 45 years of division, East and West Germany reunited just four days short of East Germany’s 41st founding anniversary (Oct 7, 1949). The new united Germany took the name the Federal Republic of Germany, the formal name of the former West Germany, and adopted the constitution of the former West Germany. Today is a national holiday in Germany, Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Day of German Unity).

‘Leave It To Beaver’ Television Debut – Anniversary

Oct 4, 1957. This family sitcom was a stereotypical portrayal of American family life. It focused on Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver (Jerry Mathers) and his family: his patient, understanding and all-knowing father, Ward (Hugh Beaumont); impeccably dressed housewife and mother, June (Barbara Billingsley); and Wally (Tony Dow), Beavers good-natured, all-American older brother. The perfectness of the Cleaver family was balanced by other, less-than-perfect characters played by Ken Osmond, Frank Bank, Richard Deacon, Diane Brewster, Sue Randall, Rusty Stevens and Madge Blake. The last episode aired Sept 12, 1963. Leave It to Beaver remained popular in reruns.

Charlton Heston’s Birthday – Anniversary

Charlton-Heston Oct 4, 1923. Born at Evanston, IL, the handsome, resolute Heston won the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Moses in the 1956 Hollywood epic The Ten Commandments. Over a career that spanned six decades, his credits include Ben-Hur, Touch of Evil, Will Penny and Planet of the Apes. Heston died Apr 5, 2008, at Beverly Hills, CA.

Edward L. Stratemeyer’s Birthday – Anniversary

Oct 4, 1862. American author of children’s books, Stratemeyer was born at Elizabeth, NJ. He created numerous series of popular children’s books, including The Bobbsey Twins, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Tom Swift, hiring ghostwriters to work from his outlines. He and his Stratemeyer Syndicate, using 60 or more pen names, produced more than 1,300 books, selling more than 200 million copies. Stratemeyer died at Newark, NJ, May 10, 1930, but his daughters continued his legacy of essentially mass-produced literature until 1982.

Jonathan Edwards’ Birthday – Anniversary
Oct 5 all-day

Oct 5, 1703.  Jonathan Edwards, famed theologian and leader of the Great Awakening, the religious revival in the colonies, was born at East Windsor, CT. His Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is the most famous sermon in American history. He later became president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Edwards died at Princeton, NJ, Mar 22, 1758, when he contracted smallpox from an inoculation.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Debuts – Anniversary

Oct 5, 1969. This wacky comedy series debuted on BBC-1 in Great Britain and aired until 1974. The cast was made up of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and American Terry Gilliam. John Philip Sousas Liberty Bell March got the show started, and viewers were treated to surreal animation and such skits as The Spanish Inquisition and The Ministry of Silly Walks. On Oct 6, 1974, Monty Pythons Flying Circus began airing in the US. The cast members also made four films together.
