Some of them (only a few!) even in my own family. I always tell them that genealogy gave me a sense of connectedness in this world that I never experienced before. Knowing the people that I came from, even if they were poor farmers, was very calming and profound. Everyone’s family story is unique and worth capturing. I try to encourage the uninitiated to talk to their elders before they are gone. Often that is all they need to get started.

Suddenly the wars, social changes, and old-fashioned activites of daily life become *interesting* because your *family* experienced them and that influences *you*! Knowing these events that your ancester experienced, makes you think more closely about how you and your family react to events, and gives you greater understanding. I find it facinating!
