I have the great pleasure of introducing you to Jenna Mills of the Desperately Seeking Surnames blog and the history behind the blog. Jenna documents her path as she traces her ancestors and shares the information she finds along the way. She also throws a little bit of the “here and now in,” just to entertain!
Jenna’s genealogy journey started when she lost both her parents only six weeks apart in 2001. Jenna suddenly had inherited documents, photos, and names. A light bulb came on and she said, “I want to find out who these people are!”
Jenna’s Family and Her Blog
Neither friends nor family follow or read Jenna’s blog with any regularity. Some family members are curious about what Jenna finds in her research, but no one else has her level of interest in family history. Jenna thinks and hopes that one of these days; someone else will get the “genealogy bug” and she will have a partner to collaborate with!
How Jenna Follows The Rest of Us
Jenna uses Google Reader to stay up to date on her blog reading. Jenna is very happy with Google products and feels that Google is a fabulous tool for genealogy researchers. The information she has discovered just thru Google Books, Google Maps with “Street View” cannot be beat!
Jenna receives email notifications when someone leaves a comment on her blog but does not use email for blog reading.
On a typical day, Jenna may follow over 50 genealogy blogs, which usually means spending several hours on a weekend trying to catch up on her blog reading.
Jenna’s Thoughts on Blogging
When Jenna starting blogging she had only one concern: content. Jenna was afraid she wouldn’t have anything to blog about. Jenna would have time periods where she would draw a total blank, but with the various blogging prompts in the genealogy blogging community, finding something to post about is not a problem any longer.
As a general rule, Jenna’s blog is strictly dedicated to genealogy, but at times, she will post non-genealogy related information. Jenna feels this allows her followers to get a better feel and sense of her personality.
In Jenna’s own words, “having a blog has been a wonderful learning process and I encourage everyone to give it a try no matter how often they feel they can post”.
It’s great to have you here Jenna! Please head over to Jenna’s blog; leave her a comment letting her know you stopped by.
