May I Introduce To You . . . Daniel Dillman

Daniel Dillman

I have the pleasure of introducing you to Daniel Dillman of the Indiana Dillmans blog, described as, “Family genealogy of the Dillman family originating in southern Indiana, and general genealogy discussion.”

How Daniel Got Started with Genealogy

Daniel has been generally interested in genealogy since he was a kid. He actively started working on his family lines back in the mid 1980’s.

Daniel’s paternal grandmother had a bit of data and shared it with him. That is when Daniel became interested in going back one more generation.

Daniel’s Blog and His Family

Daniel’s family is not as interested in genealogy as he is, but as family members they read his blog from time to time.  They do get a sense of their history and find enjoyment from learning new and interesting facts about their family history.  In Daniel’s own words, “I think it’s still a novelty for them to know someone who’s regularly writing a blog.”

Daniel knows that several family members and friends have checked out his blog out of curiosity, but he would be surprised if any were following him regularly.  His family seems most interested when he posts old photos he has found.

How Daniel Follows the Rest of Us

Daniel uses Google Reader to keep up with his blog reading. He likes how it integrates well with everything else he is doing. On a typical day, Daniel subscribes to about 26 blogs, “I’m still pretty new to reading blogs, so that number will surely go up.”

Currently, Daniel is not using email to receive blog updates, but is giving some thought to the possibilities.

Daniel’s Thoughts on Blogging

Daniel caught the genealogy blogging “bug” from a technology seminar he had attended.  The main focus was to get attendees to create a blog and post to it for a few weeks or longer. Once Daniel saw how easy it was to create a blog, he figured two wouldn’t be any more difficult than one.

Genealogy is one of Daniel’s major active hobbies these days and he realized, “it just seems like a natural subject for a blog. The funny thing is, I didn’t really read any blogs, so I wasn’t aware of the exploding genealogy blog scene until after I started writing my own, and looking to push it for more readers.”

One of Daniel’s concerns on starting a genealogy blog was whether or not he could consistently come up with something to write about.  In Daniel’s own words, “fortunately, the genealogy blogosphere has a number of great Memes to help generate ideas. Between Thomas MacEntee at GeneaBloggers and Randy Seaver at Genea-Musings, I have yet to be so blocked I couldn’t come up with at least a short post.”

Daniel is an I.T. “guy” by day, so any concerns of “just not knowing how” were a minor concern; technology is not a “show stopper” for him.

What Daniel Loves Most About Genealogy

Daniel enjoys discovering things that had been lost or forgotten. He likes to show people interesting things they didn’t know, or forgot about their families.

Daniel’s Time Capsule Message

“Keep it going! Society that has no past has no future.”
