May I Introduce To You . . . Cathy Palm

Cathy Palm

I have the great pleasure of introducing you to Cathy Palm and her blog, Detour Through History, described as, “. . . Historical and/or genealogical items of interest that may have a connection to me.”

How Cathy Got Started in Genealogy

Cathy has been on her genealogy journey for 23 years now, “I considered it a challenge when a cousin married a famous person and the newspaper accounts stated that the famous one’s family went way, way, way back; on the other hand my cousin’s family could be traced back to his parents (when his grandparents, my great aunt and uncle, were still living). I then wondered how far our mutual lineage could be traced.”

Cathy’s Family and Her Blog

“My husband says it’s all Greek to him! Don’t believe any non-genealogist family or friends are regular readers, but from the feedback I get there are a few occasional readers in the family.”

How Cathy Follows the Rest of Us

“In the early days, I ‘Googled’ search terms like ‘genealogy’ and ‘Michigan’ to read blogs of interest.”

For the most part, Cathy likes to use Google Reader to catch up on her blog reading. She does receive a few updates via her email. On a daily basis, Cathy follows about 20 blogs, or, as many as she can.

Cathy’s Thoughts on Blogging

“I’m always getting sidetracked and go off on tangents in my research, so I figured my blog would track my historical/genealogical ‘detouring.’ I also thought of it as a tool to organize pictures and data.”

Cathy had a few concerns when it came to blogging, “Losing what I put online in cyberspace and technology.”

What Cathy Loves Most About Genealogy

“How it personalizes historical events (Revolutionary War, Mayflower voyage, Civil War, etc.).”

Cathy’s Time Capsule Message

“Keep searching.”
