grinning Santa Claus

Santa Claus

Did you ever send a letter to Santa? Did you ever visit Santa and “make a list?” Do you still believe in Santa Claus?

UPDATE: so many folks have fond memories of Santa Claus/Father Christmas/St. Nicholas that it was hard to pick the highlights!

  • Let’s start with newcomer J.M. of Tracing My Roots – she lives in Netherlands where celebrating the arrival of Sinterklaas is a Dutch holiday tradition.
  • In the Land Down Under it is Father Christmas rather than Santa Claus that Shelley of Twigs of Yore remembers!
  • For those who grew up with the Czech tradition, like Larry of Hesch History, you not only received a visit from St. Nicholas, but a frightening demon who brought potatoes or coal to the less well-behaved children.
  • Is a sleigh the only mode of transportation for Santa? Ask Sherry at Family Tree Writer and she’ll tell you of the Santa Fly In.
  • Lynn at The Armchair Genealogist tells us about a mystery Santa who left a gift at the front door every year for 28 years!
  • Finally, conflicted about whether to believe or not believe in Santa? Kay at KayB’s Place tells us how her family handled the concept of Santa and keeping the Christ in Christmas.  In a similar but still different way, Greta at Greta’s Genealogy Bog reminds us of the Christian nature of the original Saint Nicholas.
